EMEA 5 FOR THE FIGHT CANCER RESEARCH INITIATIVE

In October 2017, the employees of Qualtrics EMEA began a mission to raise €500,000 for cancer research, with a uniquely different approach. Instead of generally fundraising for a cancer charity, we decided we wanted to fund cancer researchers directly. We created a partnership with Breakthrough Cancer Research, a charity who focus solely on fundraising for poor prognosis cancers such as lung, pancreatic and oesphageal that have not received the same amounts of funding for research as other cancers, and thus patient outcomes are lagging behind.

Together, we established a 3-year cancer tumour immunology programme, which will fund three research positions, including the Dermot Costello Cancer Immunology Fellowship, in memory of our late Chairman who passed away from cancer in January 2018. The researchers will focus on developing immunotherapy treatments to harness the body's immune system to fight cancer. Tumour immunology is the most significant development in cancer treatment since chemotherapy began.

In less than a year, we have raised over €150,000 and have hired the first researcher of three, a Cancer Tumour Immunologist.

THE QUALTRICS CONNECTION

Cancer has always been part of our story. Qualtrics was founded in 2002, following one of our founder’s Scott Smith’s cancer diagnosis. As part of his recuperation, Scott and his son Ryan worked on a small project which grew into Qualtrics - which now has more than 9,000 customers in over 90 countries. Today, Ryan is still serving as CEO and Scott is thankfully cancer- free. Our EMEA operations began in 2013 when Dermot Costello was hired to build the business here. Unfortunately, cancer affected Qualtrics again when Dermot was diagnosed with cancer. He went on to build the EMEA business from 0 to 250 employees, and sadly passed away in January 2018.
